Dennis, In my previous post, you helped me call the helpProvider to render the Table of Contents from the .CHM file produced with Dr. Explain. The next step for me is to call the helpProvider with the HH_DISPLAY_TOPIC, HH_DISPLAY_SEARCH, or HH_HELP_CONTEXT commands and hopefully a "seed" string which will render context sensitive help. Can the htmlHelp function do this on its own with the string keywords and topics entered in Dr. Explain, or do I need to maintain a separate dictionary of keyword strings in my own code? It looks to me like an alternate htmlHelp signature would be required in order to pass in the keyword string.

Hey, thanks Dennis! Works great now.

I picked up the usage/calling syntax from Google research and Dr. Explain forums. It looks like the function definition I was using in my module: 1) was not scoped "Public"; 2) used "Long" rather than "IntPtr" and "Int32" arguments in the signature; and 3) returned "Long" rather than "Int32". It appears my code was derived from an obsolete VB6 syntax and signature.

If you want to open topic using HtmlHelp API using HH_HELP_CONTEXT with correct Help ID and you get error

or CHM file doesn't open at the correct topic, you should check that you have set valid alias for that topic (look at the picture attached).

In short, you must set alias if you want to open topic by its Help ID, even if you aren't going to use this alias in your application. Using "Alias auto-assign" or mass-assigning aliases to all topics in project could simplify this task (open Help ID Management settings dialog using menu Options->Project Settings and going to tab CHM export->Help ID Management).

I have been working on a Dr. Explain manual for about a year. The .chm file works fine when clicked from Windows Explorer, but I am now trying to integrate it with my Visual Baisc application, and when the help function is executed in my application, nothing happens.

The HtmlHelp function is publicly defined in a Module with the following code:

Public Const HH_DISPLAY_TOPIC = &H0 ' Display the help file.
Public Const HH_DISPLAY_TOC = &H1 ' Display the table of contents.
Public Const HH_DISPLAY_INDEX = &H2 ' Display the index.

Search tab does not work in CHM

Usually after you create CHM file, open Search tab, type word and hit Enter key, there is a list of topics containing this word is shown. But sometimes there is "No topics found." message is shown, though you know that the word you typeddoes exist in CHM.
To fix this bug you can:

Uninstall Microsoft HTML Help Workshop, download latest version from "http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms669985.aspx" and install it. Ignore message "This computer already has a newer version of HTML Help." if one is shown. Re-export project toCHM.
If it doesn't help, you should check CHM language in Project settings->CHM export->File settings->Language. Re-export project toCHM.
Finally, if nothing helps, open Control panel->Regional and language settings and setup proper system locale for non-Unicode programs.

Thanks for answering.
If one window is captured with callouts then rest of the times is always captured with callouts (the same window).
But other different windows are never captured with callouts even after repeating the process many times and got to add them manually. I tried with pixel-scanning but same result.
This happens in XP 64bits.

Hello.
If you want to apply annotation template to all annotated screenshots in the project, you can remove all unused custom annotation templates (lower part of annotation "Annotation style" list).

If you want to keep all custom templates except the default one, you can:

save the annotation template you want to use to file (e.g. "MyTemplate.dea");
delete template you saved from list (don't remove file you saved on disk!);
open default template in editing mode;
press "Load annotation template" button and load the file you saved on step 1 ("MyTemplate.dea").

Hello.
Do you mean that sometimes one window is captured with callouts and sometimes the same window is captured without callouts? This is really strange behavior.

If you're running Windows Vista/7/8, try running Dr.Explain in adminstrator mode. Using "By-pixel scanning' can help as well.

Hello, after capturing my window I go to "Annotation designer settings" to change the Annotation style, select a new one, press Ok and my current topic page is updated, how can I apply my new annotation style to all topic windows of my projects, please?

No callouts after capture window

Hello all, this could be basic but sometimes after capturing a new window no callouts nor control areas are generated, only the screenshot apears. I don't know why, it random happens.

Looking forward to the next release then.

Another question regarding the project tree:
Is there a way to start the CHM help file project tree partially expanded, like say to the parent nodes? Right now when the user first opens the CHM file it's totally contracted to the root node. I would like to start with it open to the nodes in the next level down.

Hello.

You can use Ctrl+Up and Ctrl+Down keys to move children topics on the same level. Currently there are no hotkeys to move topic to the outer (same as parent) or inner (make subtopic of another topic) level.

Most likely this feature will be implemented in one of the future releases.

Project Tree

The Project Tree seems rather cumbersome to edit. Correct me if I'm wrong but the only way to promote or demote a topic is to drag it to the parent node? Then use the arrow keys to move it up or down? And you can only do this with one topic at a time?

So the base Topic node and the first one under that can't even be moved. What if I want to demote them to just a topic node?

Is there any easier way? Any tips or secrets here?
