The statuses allow marking your topics in a project tree view depending upon their completeness level:

Not started
-
In progress
-
Completed
-
Waiting
The colored mark-up visually helps you quickly estimate which parts of your project are done. Using statuses is very handy when working with large projects.
You may change the topic status either in its properties pane, or right click on the topic in the project tree view and select a status in a pop up menu.
You may also lock a completed topic by clicking on its lock icon in the project tree view.
